Thank you Sir Michael

Letters

IT has been a great privilege to have Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare as a great leader and founding father who had a vision to make Papua New Guinea an independent nation.
As a person from the young generation and a Papua New Guinean, I know of no other nation in the world that after thousands of years, became independent so quickly.
But Sir Michael made it happened less than eight years after he entered politics in 1968.
It took him only eight years to rescue Papua New Guinea from the colonial rule without bloodshed.
This is how great our founding father was.
He is gone but his legacy will always be remembered in the history of PNG.
On behalf of all the students and the staff of the Papua New Guinea Education Institute, I acknowledge Sir Michael’s contribution during his term as a prime minister for delivering the assembly hall to the in-service college in 1985.
He officiated the opening when he was prime minister.
We are now benefiting from this assembly hall.
