A shop rented by a man at Porebada village on the outskirts of Port Moresby was broken into on Friday and food items and K7,000 had been stolen, police say.
The National Capital District/Central divisional command in a statement said the victim from Hela reported the crime to police who went to Porebada on Saturday, and arrested three men and recovered K6,175.
“The victim, however, refused to press charges on the suspects, but opted for a peace mediation among themselves,” police said.
Police said the victim told the suspects to return the remainder of the stolen cash amounting to K875 within a period of two weeks.
A policeman who was at the centre of this investigation said, the Highlander recovered much of the stolen cash and specifically opted for peace mediation, to avert any ill feelings the local villagers may harbour against him and his business.
Police would return in two weeks’ time to witness the payment.
Meanwhile police arrested a man who was part of a gang that robbed a private clinic at Gordon in Port Moresby in January.
Police said the man from Kotna in Dei, Western Highlands, was waiting at the Gerehu bus stop when he was spotted by members of Sector Patrol Fox 203 and arrested.
