ONE of the three bulls used for breeding cattle at the Sagalau livestock station in Madang was injured by thieves after they cut one of its tendons.

Sagalau livestock manager George Tom said the station had 90 cows and three bulls. He said a group of men entered the yard at around 3am last Saturday, opened the gate and released the cattle onto the North Coast Road.

“The injured bull was later discovered by the Madang police who alerted us,” Tom said.

He said the cattle farm had two security guards but both were asleep when the incident happened.

Tom said one of them woke up when he heard noises at the gate and discovered that the cattle were on the main road.

“The security guards could not identify the men but we are still conducting investigation,” Tom said.

He said it was difficult to replace the bull because sometimes bull suppliers had limited stock.

Meanwhile, fencing material for the CCI Murunas cattle yard have been purchased and work will start next week.

Tom said 81 barbed wire rolls and 2,000 star pickets were to build the fence around the yard.

CCI Murunas and the Livestock deDartment will work as partners to allow cattle to breed and graze in CCI’s coconut plantation.
