A POLICE officer in Wewak, East Sepik, and two other residents have been arrested and are in custody over their alleged involvement in the Saksak compound incident in which a young man was killed in July.
Internal Affairs unit director Chief Supt Emil Alpha confirmed that investigations had led to their arrests. “The three suspects have been remanded in police custody,” he said.
The deceased identified as Joshua Jam, 19, from Raten village in the Keram local level government area of Angoram, was shot near his place of residence at Saksak compound. The compound accommodates urban drifters from all over the province.
Police in Wewak told The National earlier this year that security guards from a local firm were on route to be dropped off at various posts around Wewak when the incident happened at 5pm.
Supt Albert Beli said a group of men approached the guards when they reached the intersection at the Wirui Cathedral Road.
One of the men armed with a knife opened the door of the vehicle and pulled one of the guards out.
Supt Beli said the guard fought his way back into the vehicle and locked the door.
On the way back, the guards met the same group at the same intersection.
Police attempted to bring the confrontation under control and it was during the commotion that the victim was shot and killed.
