Three districts, office sign deals to rollout NID project

THREE more districts, Alotau, Kiriwina-Goodenough and Samarai-Murua, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the PNG Civil and Identity Registry (PNGCIR) on Friday to carry out registration of their people in Alotau.
There are now 28 districts that have partnered with PNGCIR to have the NID project rollout.
PNGCIR deputy registrar-general Salome Bogosia said the MoU was for six months followed by a review from the districts and PNGCIR.
Bogosia said the three districts were the first to sign up this year apart from Esa’ala, who signed its MoU last year.
“Over the years, we have been working on a stand-alone basis, the districts were not a major player in the registration process,” she said.
“Having the support of the four districts in Milne Bay will help increase the numbers and fast-track the registration process.”
Bogosia thanked MPs Davis Steven (Esa’ala), Douglas Tomuriesa (Kiriwina-Goodenough), Henry Leonard (Samarai-Murua) and Charles Abel (Alotau) – for signing the agreement.
All four MPs have assured PNGCIR of their partnership going forward to ensure that the people have access to birth certificates and NID cards to access Government services.
Meanwhile, the NID registration in Esa’ala has already started and this will be soon followed by the other three districts.
Davis said the NID project was important and every citizen needed to register.
He said he was ready to help his people get registered.
