THREE new Covid-19 cases have been reported in the National Capital District (NCD) and East New Britain (ENB) – taking the national total to 684.
According to National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning, two of the new cases were healthcare workers from Kimbe in West New Britain attending a workshop in ENB.
They are both asymptomatic.
All the workshop participants have tested negative and are on home quarantine.
In Port Moresby, a 53-year-old man tested positive at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
He had been complaining of fever, cough and shortness of breath.
He recently was in Lae.
The national total of 684 includes the seven who died, 601 people who have recovered and 76 active cases.
The NCD has 359, Western 204, WNB with 68, EHP 13, Central nine, Morobe six, Western Highlands five, East Sepik three, Enga three, two each in Milne Bay, New Ireland and West Sepik and one each in Southern Highlands, AROB and Hela.
Manning has commended Papua New Guineans for their resilience, patience and understanding so far.
“We have come out better from this experience and official reports have placed the country among those that have reacted well to mitigate the pandemic in the early stages up to now,” he said.
The National Control Centre will hold a national summit next year to assess how the country has managed the pandemic and make recommendations on how best PNG can move forward.
The focus of the summit is on response, mitigation and recovery and how Papua New Guinea can continue this beyond 2021 through a collective health response while promoting sustainable development and a digital pathway.
