COACH Stanley Tepend says he is thrilled that his Lae Tigers will be playing in their fifth Digicel Cup grand final in six years as they aim for their fourth title.
The Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored side secured the first grand final spot after they beat Mendi Muruks 14-10 in the major semifinal at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Tepend said his team recruited a number of young talents this year following the departure of six players to the SP Hunters.
Despite the transition, it had no bearing on the side’s performance as they maintained their dominance in the semi-professional competition by winning the minor premiership on their way to the grand final.
“The Coronavirus pandemic really affected our preparations at the start of the season but we managed to handle it well,” Tepend said.
“There was a big change in the team as we recruited a number young talents this year but I think the team bonding really helped us all season and it definitely got us this far.”
Meanwhile, the Papua New Guinea Kumuls legend said the Muruks gave his side a tough challenge.
“It’s always good to play against a side like that,” Tepend said.
“Playing against tough sides only makes us work harder to be better.
“Finals football is different and always tough.
“There’s nothing much you can do as a coach.
“You just want them to play on adrenaline and the excitement of the stage, and that’s what they did against the Muruks. We are happy to take the week off and prepare for the Sept 12 grand final.”
