Time to take NSL to the next level

FINALLY, football has returned home where it all started in PNG.

Congratulations to Lae and Madang for making it to the grand final of the NSL.

One has to win and it was Lae City Dwellers who prevailed over their Mamose counterparts.

It is good for football that a different team has won.

For the last nine years, only one team has been dominant that results were often predictable before the matches were played.

But this year, it produced results that not many had predicted.

Former champions Hekari UFC has set a legacy that no other team in the country or the Pacific Islands had done before by becoming the champions of Oceania and played at the Club World Cup in 2010.

They have taken football in PNG to the next level and now it is up to other teams to keep it up.

This is a first title win for Lae CD and next season will show if they can maintain their supremacy.

Everyone in PNG, especially the supporters of football should now look forward to supporting Hekari and Lae CD to represent the country in the O-League Championship next year.

On another note, it was good to read in the papers that PNG’s greatest ever striker, Daino Sami is the strikers’ coach for Lae CD.

Lae has been in the bad books in recent years because of violence and this year’s final ending on a peaceful note has done justice to all the teams and the paying supporters who came to watch the finals.

It is a win for everyone in the province but most importantly for football in the country.
