Toiram, Pairox crowned

TOIRAM outclassed Pairox to bag the Kanaku Volleyball Association men’s grand final while Pairox fought back from one set down against Drifters to claim the women’s title. The competition is an initiative of the youths of Kararu, Nakaro and Kuguiogu in Buin, South Bougainville, together with their community leaders. It was co-sponsored by Kararu chief and prominent businessman, Albert Nukuitu, and South Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu. Toiram maintained their dominant form displayed throughout the season, defeating Pairox 3-0 in Sunday’s grand final. The scoreline, however, was not a true indication of how the game unfolded as Pairox made Toiram work hard to win by taking every set right down to the wire. Sporting officials were impressed with the standard and the talent displayed by the youths in the grand finals.
In the women’s grand final, Drifters showed early dominance in play to win the first set but could not maintain their form for the remainder of the match. It was do-or-die for both teams but while Pairox steadied and had more control in their game, Drifters dropped their guard and were scrappy, losing the third and fourth sets.
