CRIMINALS will be putting their lives at risk in armed robberies, NCD metropolitan commander Supt Joseph Tondop says.
He made the comment after a high speed car chase and fatal shooting of a gang member by police on Tuesday afternoon in NCD’s North Waigani suburb.
That showdown resulted in the death of a gang member and the wounding of two others.
“My position is clear.”
“If they (criminals) continue to commit crime, police will come down hard on them,” he said.
Tondop said, unlike other countries, PNG had enough food, land and resources and he saw no reason why youths had to turn to criminal activities.
He said the fatal shooting was unfortunate for the victims and their families but police had a responsibility to protect people and their property.
Tondop said police would go on a city-wide campaign to talk with all unemployed youths in an effort to address law and order issues.
