Tool helps boost comms with disabled people

agencies in the law and justice sector will soon be able to communicate effectively with people living with disabilities with the help of a communication tool.
Disability advisor Dr Alexandra Gartrell said the the pidgin disability inclusive communication guide would enable police officers, lawyers, and staff of the law and justice sector communicate effectively with people living with of disabilities.
She said a consultation workshop was held in Port Moresby recently to get views from disability representatives in the country to develop an effective communication guide that reflected their needs.
Secretary for Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) Dr Mange Matui said the constitution called for equality, therefore “we must promote equality by supporting and providing equal opportunities for people living with disabilities”.
Matui said equality must be practised irrespective of race, tribe, political opinion religion and sex.
“We as implementing agencies, we are obliged by the specific provision inserted under section 55 of the constitution that calls for the creation of laws and policies that safeguard the welfare, and promote the interest of people with special needs,” he said.
Matui said people living with disabilities required special care and treatment.
