TWO students, Carlynne Dina Sialis and Emmanuel Kose, have topped the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS) to become recipients of the Executive Dean’s award.
Sialis and Kose graduated under Psychology and Political Science with the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) under the university’s SHSS strand.
Sialis, 28, from East New Britain and Manus, told The National that it was through setting priorities right, commitment, and hard work that had brought her this far.
She said that she had always been consistent with her studies with the aim of graduating one day despite financial constraints and other challenges.
“My secret for topping SHSS and graduating with the highest GPA and coming this far is through putting God first and setting priorities right,” she said.
“Attend classes, do your assignments, set your priorities right and do what you have to do as a student but most importantly, be consistent.
“It was because of God, my hard work and commitment that had taken me this far,” Sialis said.
She said that as the first born child in a family of six, she hoped that her three small brothers will look up to her as their role model and to follow in her footsteps.
Kose, 24, from Madang, said that this was the fruit for his hard work and determination despite personal struggles that he had encountered while being a student.
He completed his secondary education at Tusbab secondary and applied to the university to take up political science.
He said this was because ever since his high school days, he had been passionate about working with the government and this had motivated him to take up political science.
He is now doing his post graduate studies but said he would love to join the workforce if given the chance.
“It’s an option in which I am working on while waiting for future opportunities,” he said.
He acknowledged his mum, dad, and family for always being his rock and for supporting him throughout his education.
