Tornadoes get gold pass

HARBOUR City Tornadoes captain Jamie Mavoko’s two penalty goals saw his side edge Vadavada United 4-0 in the final of the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup’s Central leg on Friday.
The win at Bava Park also earned his team a gold pass to the tournament’s finals later this month.
The match was played under lights and both sides struggled in the conditions but that did not affect the intensity of the clash as the hard runs and brutal defence kept the fans entertained.
Tornadoes beat Central Ace 54 Bears 14-4 in their semifinal while United stopped 289 Gamblers 10-2 to qualify for the final.
Centre William Bire, who scored eight tries in the competition, led the Konedobu-based Tornadoes to victory though the Southern Confederate representative was a marked man throughout the decider.
Tornadoes coached by Wilson Mavoko completed the tournament unbeaten.
United had several opportunities inside the Tornadoes half but errors stifled their momentum. Competition organisers commended the 16 sides – as well as the supporters and team managements – that took part in the Central leg for their conduct and play.
Grand final referee Glen Pake’s calls were accepted by both teams who concentrated on their game.
The Tornadoes were given the gold pass by Central competition director Vagi Vali.
