WEIGHLIFTER Dika Toua won Team Papua New Guinea’s first gold medals when she topped the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall standings in the women’s 49kg in Apia, Samoa, yesterday.
Guam’s Calma Dalamaya claimed silver and the Solomon Islands’ Mala Jaylyn secured bronze at the Faleata Sports Complex.
Toua settled for silver behind eventual Commonwealth champion and gold medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. India’s Chanu, 35, is a former world champion. Canada’s Amanda Braddock won bronze.

In the women’s 45kg, Toua’s sister Konio, pictured, won silver medals in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall standings.
In an amazing show of strength, Kiribati’s Tebora Willy collected gold in the women’s 45kg snatch (with a lift of 52kg), clean and jerk, and overall standings. Konio managed a lift of 50kg.
Willy also went on to win the clean and jerk category resulting – 3 gold medals for her nation in the women’s 40 kg category.
“I’m proud to represent Kiribati and want to dedicate my medals to my family,” she said.
Following the women’s events, the men’s 49kg group A and 55kg group kicked off.
Elson Edward from Nauru was too strong for his category, claiming three gold in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall standings. It was a dominant performance.
Winning silver in the overall placing was PNG’s Ian Nauari and bronze went to the Solomon Islands’ Walter Shadrack. – gamesnewsservice
