MAPRIK town in East Sepik came to a standstill on Friday when people paid their last respects to one of the longest-serving teachers in the district.
Mariana Tangura, who served the district as a teacher for more than 30 years, was given a fitting funeral procession with a police escort and presence of prominent figures. She was 52.
The funeral saw students from all schools in Maprik, including Jame Primary School and Maprik Secondary School, welcome the long-service teacher at the Admin Primary School where Tangura was deputy head teacher.
Tangura’s body was escorted to the school grounds and then to the Maprik AOG Church where the funeral service was held.
The body was then handed over to family members.
District development authority chief executive officer Joshua Himina said Tangura had left a legacy.
He said many of the students she had taught had become successful .
“To many this great woman was a teacher but to her colleagues and community, the 52-year-old had somewhat become a mother figure and a mentor to her younger colleagues,” Himina said.
