CHIMBU people are bracing for a provincial-wide mourning day when the body of Peter Waieng is flown into Kundiawa today.

A funeral service planned for the former politician at the St Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Port Moresby yesterday did not eventuate due to differences in the family.

A priest who announced the cancellation did not elaborate.

Supporters, friends and relatives of Waieng living along the Chimbu stretch of the Highlands Highway erected makeshift mourning houses since he was killed in Port Moresby in late August.

A huge crowd of mourners is expected at the Kundiawa airport to receive the casket which will be accompanied by immediate family members and political leaders.

Chimbu provincial administrator Joe Kunda yesterday confirmed that a reception to receive the body had been planned by a committee on the ground.

Waieng was killed at Roku village outside Port Moresby on Aug 27.
