Trade union backs call to review appointments

THE PNG Trade Union Congress says an appointment for a college or university administrator should not be politically tainted.
General-secretary Clemence Kanau said politics often circumvented established processes and procedures of appointment resulting in negative outcomes.
Kanau was referring to the appointments of the principal of the Port Moresby Business College, the Chancellor and acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of PNG by Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Minister Pila Niningi.
He said the congress supported the call by its affiliate, the PNG Teachers Association, for a review of the appointments.
Niningi earlier said the appointments were based on merit and on consultation with stakeholders plus the recommendation by the secretary.
