PASSENGERS travelling on the Highlands Highway to Lae, Madang and the highlands provinces on Good Friday were delayed for hours as efforts were made to recover a truck that went off the road.
The incident happened near Kompri, Eastern Highlands.
The truck owned by a private company was travelling from Lae when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
One witness said the driver was negotiating a bend when it veered off the road.
It was unclear what sort of cargo it was carrying last Thursday evening.
A police highway patrol unit with armed officers was at the scene to prevent looting.
The road was cleared at around 2.30pm last Friday, allowing traffic through.
Frustrated passengers said the truck should have been pulled out during the night when traffic on the highway was light.
The truck driver escaped with some injuries according to police. Police are investigating the accident.
