Traffic police investigate reservist after vehicle ditched

NATIONAL Capital District-Central police commander acting Asst Comm Anthony Wagambie Jr says traffic police are investigating how a police vehicle belonging to the NCDC Reserve Unit was ditched at the Gerehu roundabout in Port Moresby early yesterday.
ACP Wagambie said traffic police attended the accident and took into custody a police reservist, who is now facing charges of driving without a licence and driving negligently under the influence of liquor.
Wagambie expressed disappointment at the conduct of the reservist which was done outside his rostered duties.
He said the NCD Met Supt would be tasked to ensure reservists, who were sworn to serve the constabulary, were well disciplined and subservient to its code of ethics at all times.
He said of late the NCD/Central command had gradually been achieving a lot in terms of tackling crime but this particular incident could give the constabulary a bad image.
“We have a lot of hard-working policemen and policewomen who are sacrificing their time and effort to serve our people in the city, but something like this can easily undermine our effort.
“That’s why it is important to ensure discipline is strictly implemented at all times,” he said.
Wagambie had raised issues regarding the command and control over reservists a few weeks ago.
He said the Met Supt would meet the NCDC management to discuss issues concerning the operability of the NCDC Reserve Unit.
