Traffic police need help to control ‘heavy traffic congestion’

TRAFFIC police in Port Moresby have appealed to all station commanders to help them control heavy traffic congestion in the city.
Officer in-charge of Boroko traffic office Joseph Salle made the call following a number of road construction works currently underway for the Apec summit in November.
He said these had contributed to the workforce in the city arriving late for work and returning home late.
Salle said Boroko traffic had 67 officers and nine reservists – which were not enough.
“If we want to station ourselves everywhere to control traffic flow, this would be a problem,” he said.
Salle said police station commanders should ensure some of their men assist traffic officers.
“In that way, I believe we can at least address the public need to maintain a smooth flow of traffic.”
“This will enable our working people as well as students get to their offices and schools on time,” he said.
“You will notice heavy traffic congestion almost in all parts of the city, especially at traffic lights.
“There is need for police presence to make sure traffic flow runs smoothly.”
Salle said he had discussed the urgency of this with NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou.
