Transport issue hinders jail ops

BEON prison in Madang will not be taking prisoners to court, school or hospital because it has a old vehicle, Beon Jail commander Supt Andrew Polis says.
“We will look after the cell only till further notice,” Polis said.
Polis said the prison had only one old vehicle trying to do all the work for the prison.
He said who would be blamed if the prisoners get sick and die.
“The police cell at Jomba had been condemned and that has put extreme pressure on the prison operations trying to deal with over-crowding and resource scarcity,” he said.
“Using of hired vehicles has been very costly over the years and this practice has to stop.
“I am appealing to all relevant stakeholders, especially the governor of Madang and all the local MPs to consider this as an emergency call and should not be ignored,” Polis said.
Correctional Services has 19 other jails to look after and resources had been scarce.

  • Its a shame when state institutions goes ‘begging’ for donations to fund their daily operational needs.
