THE Mul-Baiyer district of Western Highlands will soon have a new rice factory, MP Koi Trappe says.
He said this yesterday at the Mul-Baiyer district office after witnessing Trukai Rice and Mul-Baiyer’s inaugural harvest of trial rice.
Trappe said the district had enormous untapped potential in agriculture.
He said his focus was to build a new rice factory so that what was harvested from local fields would be manufactured into Mul, Baiyer and Lumusa brands of rice.
“This is my vision,” Trappe said.
“We will be building this project as I’m very impressed with this first harvest that we are making today.”
Trappe said Trukai was helping the people of Mul, Baiyer and Lumusa grow rice.
He said the rice project and factory will benefit his people.
Public Enterprise and State Investments Minister William Duma commended Trappe for initiating such projects for the long-term.
He called on the people to put aside their differences and work together.
“Do not try to block roads or come up with reasons to interfere with such a project,” Duma said.
“This project is here to benefit you and I.
“As an MP of Western Highlands I support Koi Trappe and his vision.”
Agriculture and Livestock Minister Benny Allan praised Trappe for focusing on such a project.
He said the Government’s aim now was to plant more rice and reduce the millions spent annualy on imported rice.
On the rise factory, Allan said: “I think this will create a lot of opportunity for the people and the country as well. “I also would like to thank Trukai for coming to the community and expanding its projects which will increase the local production.”
