TREASURER Ian Ling-Stuckey received a surprise visit from Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare this week.
Ling-Stuckey said he was honoured to have the founding father of the nation pay him a visit.
“I was honoured today to have a really good discussion with our founding father and Grand Chief Sir Michael, PNG’s longest serving prime minister,” he said.
“We had a long meeting, talking about the challenges of good governance, including through demanding times.
“The Covid-19 crisis is clearly one of the most demanding times in our history.”
Ling-Stuckey said this was the time for learning and taking action.
“The Government is taking action – as set out in our K5.7 billion economic stimulus package. The largest economic action plan in our history,” he said.
“This includes well-targeted expenditure action of K280 million to support our health and security response, as well as K320 million to support our economic support response.”
Ling-Stuckey said PNG needed to learn from the past and also record the past for future generations.
“As I listened to Sir Michael’s advice on dealing with crises, I thought it was vital that we record the extraordinary experiences of our former leaders.
“We must learn from what we have achieved.
“I will work with Sir Michael in supporting actions to record our history so our children and our grandchildren and great grandchildren can know our proud history. For the sake of future generations, we should remember and celebrate our great leaders.”

  • Asking The Grand Thief about good governance is like asking Adolf Hitler about Jewish welfare.

  • We don’t need his advice. 35 years of his reigne in power, he led this country into the drain. No services and development done when our currency was strong. Do we really need his advice? I think, he has used up already.

  • yeah, go on and whinge and whinge about this Great man…none us will get mention in the ‘who is who?’of this country but this great leader of PNG.
If only yous have the wisdom to understand a Great man’s visit to your house in crisis time would you know the moral of this news story by the Treasurer… long live Grand Chief!

  • Sir Michael saw the Good, Bad and the Ugly.
He saw once upon a time when the country was financially stable. In the early 90s our K1 was equivalent to US$1.20.
And ofcourse Sir J became the PM and then everything spiral downwards.

Off course, our Fathers made mistakes and etc, but learn from them.
    Don’t let history repeat itself.

  • You have the right to your own opinion – this great man had my respect, still have my respect and will continue to have my respect!!
