Treasurer told to start own policies

FORMER Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, pictured,  says Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey is only copying the policies of the former government and is yet to come up with a new one.
He was responding to Ling-Stuckey’s statement about his recent meetings in New York with financial institutions regarding the PNG economy.
O’Neill said talking and grandstanding should stop because the people wanted positive economic decisions.
“After the recent few months of a dramatic decline in our economy, the people and our investment partners want action,” O’Neill said in a statement. “A treasurer builds confidence by bringing investment into the economy, not forcing it away as we are seeing currently.
“Business confidence has hit a serious low in recent months as projects have been put on hold. The flow-on effect is that local businesses are laying off staff.”
He cautioned Ling-Stuckey to “stop falsifying figures relating to the budget deficit in his supplementary budget, and stop talking down the economy with organisations such as Moody’s for no other reason but political point-scoring”.
He said the economy Ling-Stuckey inherited had “strong fundamentals but has since gone into decline as a result of indecision and confusion”.
He urged him to strengthen the economy for the sake of the “men, women and children of this country”. “He must address foreign exchange issues and announce measures he will put in place to make currency more readily available,” O’Neill said.
“He must state policy direction and make decisions that are in the interests of the economy and how our economy will continue to be managed in the face of global economic uncertainty.”

  • I don’t know much about Economics and Policies but if I am experiencing high costs of living from the late 90s to 2019 then which Prime Minister or Government is responsible for this high costs of living?
Everyone one up there in the Government or not with their Policies have contributed over time .

  • The jamesteven government has already failed in collapse of PNG economy. The parents will face tuition fees and now teachers salary has cut. We are asking the jamesteven government of why they have deduct 50-100 kina in our pays last fortnight?

  • Let us not be like turtles on the beach patting its chest. Let Jamesteven settle what we owed thru borrowings. When you owe something from others, you must be mindful to reimburse and if you don’t you commit sin in the eyes of God. What belongs to Ceaser must be returned and what’s belongs to God must be returned to God. Let us not sell PNG country to dogs. We are accountable in the judgement seat of His throne. We must not live selfishly and continue to do wrong but do the right cause of action because there is a crown waiting for us. To God be the Glory.

  • In my opinion, it was a mere in-house drift within PNC that got the former government ousted by the lieutenants that came from within. Though the level of national debt was increasing, the former PM calculated the pros and cons. He was determined, he was full of purpose.
Leadership without vision lacks to clearly understand its destiny. It doesn’t matter to us who is the head of the government. What we want is a government that can always stand for its citizens, defending and according its citizens the best.

  • Success come through failures. Ask every successful person and they will tell you that they failed many times before tasting success. Thanks leaders in both sides of our respectable house for being vocal to our national issues. Appeal to them is to put the nations interest first before your own personal interest through constructive debates and adaptation of constructive ideas from both sides of the house and even ordinary citizens. “GOD GUIDE PNG” in this time to “TAKE BACK PNG. “
