Treatment of sick inmates boosted

THE treatment of sick prisoners at Daru prison has been boosted with the deployment of Daru general hospital nurses.
Correctional Services have also added 10 more officers at the prison which had complaints of disease including typhoid last week, says CS commissioner Stephen Pokanis.
Pokanis said prisoners would no longer be allowed to visit Daru hospital for treatment for security reasons.
“We have stopped prisoners from travelling to and from the main hospital,” he said.
The nurses working in the prison are providing basic health care to the screening of detainees before their movement on to Bomana prison this week.
He said those prisoners in Daru with medical conditions had been noted and would receive treated in Bomana when they got there.
“The detainees have been instructed to clean their dormitories and observe basic hygiene,” Pokanis said.
He said simple but effective measures could protect the prison population against disease outbreaks.
“They have been shown simple personal hygiene practices like washing hands, using bleach to clean toilets, and keeping the place clean are some of the measures that can be taken to reduce the chance of diseases developing and spreading.”
Pokanis stressed that the situation at Daru prison had been brought under control.
