A TRIBE in Bulolo, Morobe, has become the first in the Mumeng local level government to receive its incorporated land group (ILG) certificate.
Chairman Yalamu Yaeng said it took some effort to mobilise the 13 clans in the tribe to register their land.
“I am proud now because the ancestral land of the Yangina tribe is now protected for future generations,” he said.
Yaeng said the Yangina tribe got the ILG application from the Morobe lands office in 2013 but it was delayed for four years because they had to raise K24,000 to pay for surveyors survey their land.
In 2017, the tribe’s 38,000 hectares of land was surveyed.
The members then lodged their ILG application with the lands office.
“The total cost of registering our land was over K100,000,” treasurer Mark Kilamu said.
“We were never supported by any business, church or non-government organisation. Therefore, I am really thankful to my hardworking people of Yangina tribe.”
The Yangina tribe live in three villages – Sanang, Dangal and Gumots – in wards 21 and 23 of Mumeng.
Yaeng said their application was published last Dec 8.
Since there was no objection, the Lands Department granted them the licence on March 23, 2021.
He said the executives flew to Port Moresby last week to receive their ILG certificate.
Secretary Jerry Gedisa said this was not the end of the team’s work.
Yaeng said the locals were open to any investor interested in developing their land for commercial purposes to benefit the people.
