FORMER PNG Pukpuk Paul Joseph and former Palai Dulcie Bomai are training women in Daru, Western, basic rugby skills in preparation for a sevens tournament this weekend.
Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU)’s match official Petero Kilori is part of the team conducting a one-week training programme with women’s rugby teams.
The trio were invited by hosts of the Joey Charlie Cup sevens tournament, which starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday in Daru.
Joseph, Kilori and Bomai arrived in Daru on Monday and have been training women’s teams that would be competing in the sevens tournament.
Joseph, who is the PNGRU competitions manager, told The National yesterday that women’s sevens was not common in Western and that it was important for such a training to be carried out.
“This training sessions we were having throughout the week is not part of PNG Rugby programme,” Joseph said.
“We were invited by Daru Rugby so because we were here on Monday, we decided to have training sessions with the women’s teams that will be competing in the Joey Charlie Cup.
“The tournament has included women for the first time so we just wanted to train them with the basics such as how to do line-out, proper tackling techniques, proper scrums and other skills of the game.
“There are total of eight women teams so it’s a big group that we’ve been training.
“For today (yesterday) we’ve divided and allocated two teams to one person so Petero, Dulcie and I are training them in the morning and afternoon sessions.
“This is not initiated by PNGRU but it’s just us as individuals trying to help out the local women here in Western.”
