A TRUKAI squash re-boot camp for juniors kicked off on Wednesday at the Port Moresby Racquets Club with 14 participants undergoing a three-day refresher course on the sport under its new Covid-19 measures.
Club squash director and Papua New Guinea Squash Federation secretary Merlyn Alarcos said the camp was aimed at re-introducing the sport after a year-long hiatus.
“This is to rejuvenate and re-energise our juniors because we haven’t been on the courts for over a year now,” she said.
“The moment we got approval from the National Control Centre (NCC), we immediately went into a re-boot camp.
“We didn’t feel responsible enough to open up the courts because of the confinement of squash courts, so we came up with our protocols and Covid-19 rules before we started and we want to introduce these rules to the kids.
“We wanted to give them that knowledge if we’re going to be playing our sport.
“We did a bit of strength and conditioning and psychology training for the kids.
“So when they grow older, they already have the mindset and conditioning.”
Alarcos said squash was in its re-boot stage in the country with the prospect of sending representative players abroad put on the back-burner for now.
“We have 14 juniors who are in our development programme and there are a handful from that group who are our elite juniors who we hope to send on international duties,” she said.
