I WOULD like to express a comment concerning the current pay rise for teachers, which is said to be actioned on Jan 1, 2014 by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).

Teachers, be weary of such sweet promises as it is like sugar icing on honey served on a golden plate.

Teacher were given such nonsense before and nothing eventuated.

Do not think that teachers are stupid.

A good example is the MOA signed by the TSC in 2010 on a salary and allowance increase for the following year, which was supposed to be K75 and K100 for 2013.

This was supposed to be backdated to Jan 1, 2011 and Jan 1, 2012, but it was never built into our pay packets.

It was as if teachers do not know how to do math.

Now, the good commissioner must tell all teachers if those outstanding entitlements will be backdated and paid accordingly.

Most teachers are not on the right salary scale and allowances need to be increased.

So, all outstanding queries must be actioned on without waiting for teachers to speak the famous ‘Waigani language’ to salary officers at Fincorp Haus before their queries are entertained.

Also, increase teachers’ salaries now before they leave for greener pastures or go on strike to disrupt the school term in 2014.

We are professionals just like doctors and the police, so treat us as such.

Please pay us our dues.
