WAGHI Tumbe are happy to see their players Jessy Matthew and Francis Kembis making progress in the 2022 SP Hunters pre-season training.
Club chairman Paul Tumun told The National yesterday the club had produced some solid additions to the Hunters squad over the last few seasons and Kembis and Matthew’s inclusion was proof of that.
He said the club was proud to see the pair maintaining Tumbe’s reputation of feeding players to the SP Brewery-sponsored side.
“It’s not the first time for Tumbe to supply players to Hunters, we’ve had players like Joe Frank, former player and current coach Baundo Aba who came through our system and made it to Hunters,” Tumun said.
“To see Jessy Matthew and Francis Kembis joining the Hunters pre-season training for first time and knowing the progress they are making is what makes us proud.
“We want to see more talents from Jiwaka come through our system and go play at Hostplus Cup level and further.
“In fact, we were expecting more than just two players from our last year’s squad to be selected into Hunters.
“Players like Valentine Wamdi, Joe Frank and David Joseph were outstanding but they missed out.
“However, they will continue to give their best for Tumbe and hopefully they get selected next time.”
Tumun said the Jiwaka government-sponsored side would arrange for contracts for Matthew and Kembis.
“If Jessy and Francis happen to make the Hunters final squad they will relocate to Queensland then we will arrange contracts for them so that they are still attached to Tumbe,” he said.
“In the case that borders open and Hunters return to be based in Port Moresby then these players can have the opportunity to play for Tumbe when they are not on the weekly team list.”
