PNG Power Ltd is committed to providing a service to the people and the Government’s purchase of the gas turbine strengthens that commitment, board chairman Larry Andagali says.

He said during the commissioning of the new gas turbine at Kanudi, in Port Moresby, the commitment was in line with the medium term development strategy and Vision 2050 – to provide electricity infrastructure and service to all communities.

He said the new turbine would improve power supply to Port Moresby residents. “I believe it will greatly assist PNG Power Ltd in its capacity to supply the increasing demand for power in the city,” Andagali said..

“PNG Power has had its fair share of issues to deal with in regards to providing the city residents with constant power supply.

“The installation of this new gas turbine will surely provide a breath of fresh air.”

He said the water level at the SirinumuDam was being affected by the weather, forcing PNG Power to reduce power supply to the city through load-shedding. Andagali said the 26-megawatt turbine would be used during peak hours and emergencies.

On average,it will operate three hours a day to cover any shortfalls in capacity.

“This is an important project for the Government, the IPBC and PNG power,” Andagali said.

“PPL appreciates the support it has been provided with and I’m sure we will all work together to bring the best out of PPL in supplying electricity to the rest of the country.”
