LAE police have recaptured two escapees during a joint operation with Correctional Services (CS) counterparts, says Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr.

Wagambie said an inmate, who escaped on Feb 25 during the mass break out at the Buimo Prison in Lae, was recaptured last Friday at the 2-Mile settlement. Wagambie identified the escapee as Milton Chris who was jailed for armed robbery at the Pelgen’s Shop along Malaita Street in Lae.

“On Friday police managed to apprehend and arrest an escapee,” Wagambie said.

“He is now been moved back to Buimo Prison,” he said.

Wagambie said another escapee involved in a mass jail breakout in 2015 was also recaptured on Monday.

“He was arrested with a firearm and three rounds of ammunition,” Wagambie said.

“He was wanted for arm robbery.”

Wagambie said they could only identify up to about 30 escapees using their recently installed computerised Case Management System (CAS) but they did not have specific details on the escapees who were in prison before the system was installed at the Lae Central Police Station.

“That is why we are getting the CS to assist us to identify some of the escapees,” Wagambie said.

“These are the people (escapees) who will make life miserable for us.

“The public needs to support us so that we can recapture the escapees.

“We know that these escapees are harboured by the people in the community.

“I am calling on the general public to cooperate with police and come forward with information.”
