Two on separate murder charges in custody pending probe

THE Lae District Court, on Monday, remanded a woman and a man facing separate murder charges to wait for police investigations to be completed.
In the first case, Piyemai Sare, 38, from Aubangu village, Kaintiba in Gulf, allegedly committed the offence on April 24 at Mumeng Block, 6-Mile, between 10pm and 11pm.
According to police, the deceased, Sare Hiahe, was talking to another person when Piyemai crept from behind a flower bed under in the dark and stabbed Hiahe on the right leg calf muscle.
The court noted that the deceased was taken to Angau Memorial Hospital the same night and was admitted there but he died the next day due to loss of blood.
In the second case before Magistrate Lorna Sani, defendant Elijah Mais, 40, from Aupwel village, Tewai-Siassi in Morobe, made his first appearance in court over the death of his wife.
Police told the court that Mais allegedly committed the offence on April 23 between 2.30am and 3am after an argument.
The court found from police report that Mais, after pushing his wife to the ground, allegedly kicked her left side and mouth with his boots on.
The court learnt that after booting her, she got up and escaped to her in-law’s house.
Police told the court that 30 minutes later, the deceased collapsed and died.
Magistrate Sani told the defendants separately that police had been given three months to investigate and complete their files.
