TWO suspects in the killing of a bus driver on the Sepik Highway in April have been arrested and are now in custody at Boram Jail in Wewak, Yangoru police say.
The suspects had escaped from police custody at Yangoru last month.
Acting Yangoru police station commander Philip Kaupa said four suspects in the killing escaped last month.
Two were recaptured last week and are now at Boram while police work to get the other suspects.
“Investigations into the killing are still continuing,” Kaupa said. “Police believe there are a couple more suspects in the incident that are still at large.
“Police are confident of having those still at large arrested and charged.
“We have information that will lead us to their arrests.”
Kaupa said with police under-resourced, community and church leaders of Kubalia and Yangoru should step in to help in the arrest of those involved in the killing. He said the presence of a mobile squad unit from Port Moresby had seen a decrease in criminal offending along the Sepik Highway.
Kaupa said that presence was temporary. He said there were currently seven policemen each at Tangori and Yangoru police stations, which was not enough to control the large population of Yangoru-Saussia.
Kaupa challenged the Yangoru-Saussia district to assist police efforts by providing transport, manpower and housing.
