Two ways to end impasse

THE current political impasse is a recipe for disaster in Papua New Guinea.
This sort of environment is not good for foreign investment and foreign diplomacy, including ties with the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.
The impasse is a constitutional crisis that needs to be resolved urgently.
It can be resolved in two fundamental ways:
The governor-general must dissolve parliament and bring forward the general election. His indecision shows that either he does not know and understand what is going on or poorly advised; and
Parliament must convene and elect a new prime minister under a no-confidence motion.
Sir Michael Somare cannot be the prime minister as he has a minority cabinet while Peter O’Neill cannot claim to be the legitimate prime minister.
So the two leaders should resign and seek fresh mandate in parliament.
The person with the most votes automatically becomes the prime minister.
