RAINBOW Flyers could not withstand the might of MJ Electrical U-Mi Yet in the round-seven opener of the National Capital District Volleyball Association men’s premier grade, losing two sets to three at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre.
U-Mi Yet’s 3-2 win on Saturday was their first of the season, ending a six-game losing streak.
Flyers themselves were in search of their second win and got off to a goog start claiming the first set 25-23.
U-Mi Yet were desperate in the second set and rebounded leveling the match 1-1 through the efforts of Francis Mage and hitters Jonathan Pae, Mala John and Eddie Aoka.
Guided by Coach Michael Unatah, U-Mi Yet were electric in their attack and worked over the Flyers’ midcourt.
Reserves Mathew Kape and Graham John came on strong in third set and put U-Mi Yet ahead 20-17.
Despite trailing by a set, Flyers coach Emmanuel Gamogamade several changes to his line-up by inserting defenders Joe Philemon, Glen Muki and Samson Mari in the front court to contain U-Mi Yet in the fourth set.
Flyers marched off too an early 18-15 lead and forced U-Mi Yet into chase mode before calling a timeout.
Flyers maintained their composure in defence and scored points well, courtesy of Philemon, Muki and Mari who were vicious on front court spikes.
The final set was fairly contested as both teams played a rally match and were tied at 6-6 after the first timeout.
Flyers scooped two easy points from errors caused by U-Mi Yet’s back court covers.
Pressure mounted as the game headed to its conclusion with Flyers ahead 12-10. The fifth set looked to be going the way of Gamoga’s Flyers but poor spiking options let U-Mi Yet catch up and level the scores at 12 a piece.
The experience of Kape in the crucial stage helped U-Mi Yet hold out Flyers beating them18-16.
