EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says the country needs more policies and awareness on climate change in schools and surrounding communities.
Uguro said this when sharing some of the country’s education experiences and challenges around climate change at an education forum in London, United Kingdom, last week.
Uguro and secretary Dr Uke Kombra represented the country at the forum and shared on ways to create opportunities for people to learn about climate change skills and solution for climate change education policies.
He said climate change affected all areas of society with education being one of the areas impacted.
“The development and delivery of quality education to our students and teachers depends on collaboration and partnership between the different levels of government, our valued partners and stakeholders,” he said.
Uguro noted that the ministry was working with partners and stakeholders and to implement initiatives such as the Education in Emergency Response and Recovery Plan.
He said the plan had allowed students from rural communities to continue learning safely and for schools to be better able to manage through disruptions caused by natural disasters.
Uguro said the plan was completed two years ago was being implemented.
“We hope to come up with policies and interventions to address climate change in education when we return,” he said.
