UN, Govt working towards creating conditions for peace

PAPUA New Guinea’s Highlands is prone to natural and human-induced hazards, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The organisation said in a statement that human-induced hazards such as tribal violence often
resulted in the destruction of property and household assets, loss
of life and population displacement.
The United Nations (UN) in PNG through its Highlands joint programme (UNHJP) is working in partnership with the Government at all levels to create conditions for peace, targeting communities affected by conflict in Hela and Southern Highlands.
The IOM, through the UNHJP and funding from the UN peace building fund, facilitated a five-day (July 12-16) community-level planning training on peace and sustainable development in Yame, Southern Highlands.
The community-planning sessions promoted the equal participation of all members of the community in mapping conflict triggers, risk-mitigation measures, partnerships and development initiatives.
This will lead to the drafting of a community peace for development plan that aligns with national and international priorities, including PNG’s Vision 2050 and UN’s sustainable development goals.
Through UN PBF’s funding, IOM will also work with communities of Tigibi, Kikita 2 and Guala in Hela and Yame, Meki, Pambel and Munihu in Southern Highlands.
