THE United Nations (UN) in its safe markets and women empowerment project has provided financial literacy training for women in informal sector, an official says.
UN project analyst Sylvia Seta said at the National Markets Convention recently that it was part of the informal economic market development.
Women from nine provinces were selected to sell their traditional market items at the convention.
They came from Western Highlands, Southern Highlands, Hela, East Sepik, Madang, East New Britain, Western, Central and the National Capital District.
Daiu Gari, an informal market vendor from Western, said they would take what they learnt on financial literacy to their districts.
Isabel Kebei, also an informal market vendor, said UN paid for their airline tickets to Port Moresby to attend the convention.
Gordon Market Association president Sana Dokopa said she reached only primary school level but through the UN Women, “I have travelled to 15 countries and I am confident because of capacity-building training”.
Community Development, Youth and Religion Minister Jason Peter sympathised with the women, thinking of his mother.
