UN Women extending partnership with media

UN Women is extending its partnership with media personnel to create opportunities for them to report appropriately on gender inequality, women leadership and violence against women.
Country deputy representative Caroline Nyamayemombe made the remarks during the certificates presentation for a two-day media workshop in Port Moresby.
Nyamayemombe said this would create opportunities and expose them to what UN Women did in communities and the best way in which they could report on certain issues of women.
She said media had great influence in changing the thoughts and conversation around addressing gender inequality, women leadership roles and violence against women prevention in the country.
“The country is a member of the United Nations, it has signed up to the sustainable development goals, one of which is goal number five which ensures women’s full participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic and public life, so the country is committed to change, and we are partnering to make sure we play our part,” she said.
Nyamayemombe told journalists that after the workshop, they could see and adjust what they could do to contribute to change the perception with the involvement of multiple players such as government civil society that came in to influence that thinking and the conversation.
She said the challenge would be on how and what reporters reported on.
She added that in five years’ time, an index observation would be made to be able to see progression and what they had done.
