Unfair decision

Letters

HOWEVER good the intentions may be for the proposed Gehamo High School in Gahuku in Goroka, it’s a flat political decision inconsiderate for equality of resource distribution.
It brings to the same area an unnecessary concentration of similar institutions.
On the same plateau, within three kilometre proximity, we have two other high schools apart from the nearby Catholic TVET institute.
These institutions are anchors for primary and high school graduates.
There are plans to upgrade Gorohanota Primary School to a day high school and eventually to secondary school.
Obviously, that brings a challenge to improve birth rates in that particular area to maintain student numbers.
The proposed site for the school is inconsiderate of all future generations since the people of Gehamo are selling what little land they have.
This proposition might well serve its purpose if nearby Okiyufa and Ufeto primary schools were considered and their levels upgraded to day high schools and then eventually to secondary.
Okiyufa and Ufeto, colonial era institutions are best suited candidate schools to be built-up to secondary level to ease over-crowding at Goroka and Asaroka Secondary schools.
Yes, Goroka district needs a few more secondary schools, however, the decision to place such a school in the local MP’s own village is politically cranky.
