UNIVERSITY men and the Spartans women won the cup final in the second weekend of the three-week Capital Rugby Union (CRU) sevens pre-season at the weekend.

In the men’s final University beat last weekend’s runner up Harlequins 24-22 while in the women’s final the 2015 Labi Amaiu Cup champions Spartans defeated close rival Harlequins 24-19. CRU competition manager and University coach Paul Joseph said he was proud of his players for putting up a much improved performance from last weekend where they lost to Defence 26-5 in the plate.

Joseph said he was pleased with the younger players for stepping up to perform and win the finals.

He said in the ladies’ finals, as expected, the Spartans who are regular CRU performers made no mistake to beat arch rivals Harlequins.

“The Spartans had been regularly performing under coach John Larry and they have blended well over time to maintain that,” he said.

Joseph said it was also pleasing to see in the ladies the Sisters’ team making a comeback and performing well. Only four out of the six women’s teams that expressed their interest to take part in the three weekend’s competition took part.

He said overall by looking at the weekend games the teams were picking up form and hopefully this weekend the teams would all be up to their best.
