BUSINESS and trading laws should be changed to address unemployment in the country, a trade unionist says
Trade union consultant Tom Vevo said the changes should stop uprisings by youths such as recently experienced.
He said from the angle of businesses and industries, the department of labour and industrial relations should revisit the employment regulations and draw up changes.
He suggested the:
l    Re-introduction and re-enforcement of the apprenticeship scheme to enable the educated to be recruited on a contract of service and be entitled for repatriation at the end of their contracts;
l    Re-introduce native ordinance on employment contract systems for all unskilled labourers and casuals employed in the food and other commodities production lines;
l    Relaxation of the hire-and-fire powers of employers and replace them with written contracts of employment to cut down on “rejects” on the streets;
l    Total ban on street sales and prosecution of Asian traders promoting illegal street sales;
l    Requirement for all employers in the city to provide pick-ups and drop-offs of employees;
l    Provision for those working Christians to practise their faith and have personal time;
l    Prohibiting of  door-to-door job seekers
As a victim of the lawlessness at Eriku, he said it was not good to point fingers but to look at avenues to help curb the problems.
