UNITECH Vice-Chancellor Dr Albert Schram says the university is safe and ready to receive students.
He told students and staff yesterday that the dormitories damaged during the recent student protest, had been restored to the same standard.
“We took a systematic approach to enhancing safety on our campus by doing our own independent risk analysis and by working with private security companies and the authorities, in particular Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie,” Schram said.
“Within its budgetary and environmental constraints, we took every action to create a safe living and working environment for staff and students.
“In fact, the university security forces have been significantly improved in the last two years.
“The University perimeter fencing would have been completed if funding would not have been pulled out at the end of last year.”
He said all university security guards had received training and were issued new uniforms, radios, torches and jackets.
“The police continue their presence in campus to assure the safety of all staff and students,” Schram said.
Schram said nearly 1000 students had already registered and students seemed eager to return to classes.
A student from Southern Highlands was killed during the protest by a rival student group in June, after he returned from holiday.
