ACTING Vice-Chancellor of the University of Technology (Unitech) Prof John Pumwa has assured the government that the university will continue to ensure that graduating engineers, technologists and scientists meet industrial expectations and requirements.

He said last Friday during the 45th graduation ceremony at the Lae campus where a record 1047 students graduated with diplomas, degrees and advanced degrees.

Post graduate students in various disciplines received 13 masters degrees and eight postgraduate diplomas.

The Surveying and Lands Studies department achieved a milestone with the first student graduating with a Masters Degree.

Eight international students were among the graduates.

Pumwa, who was appointed by the prime minister in January following moves by the former university council to remove Vice-Chancellor Dr Albert Schram, said that despite the challenges the institution had been facing, Unitech remained committed to addressing the technical and scientific human resource needs of the country.

“We also realise that without engineers, scientists and technologists our huge resources cannot be adequately exploited and Papua New Guinea will continue to rely on foreigners,” he said.

Pumwa also paid tribute to Schram, saying he had done a lot for the university during his one year tenure.

“Dr Schram would be proud of these graduates too as they are the first batch to graduate from here during his one year leadership at Unitech,” he said.

He congratulated the students on their achievements and said they should stay focused on their goals, be confident and always be positive in all situations.
