United Brothers win Easter Cup title

UNITED Brothers were crowned champions after defeating PNG Power in the inaugural Port Moresby Men’s Softball Association’s Easter Cup Challenge on Sunday.
Despite the humid conditions at the Bisini diamonds, the rivals battled it out after a slow start but Brothers’ more accurate batting and fielding saw them edge Power 5-3.
Power are known for their consistency in batting but it was Brothers who dominated the fast pitch softball finals on Easter Sunday.
Brothers fielders complemented their pitchers who proved a headache for PNG Power’s batters.
Brothers claimed the K2,000 champions’ prize while PNG Power took home K500.
Competition coordinator Consie Bais said the aim of the tournament was to ignite the interest in the code and assemble clubs to prepare for the season proper.
“The response was good,” he said.
“We had 10 teams registered for the tournament. After almost two years off it was great to be back on the softball diamonds.”
Bais said the association would kick off its season after the General Election in June.
“We will start our season after the general election but starting next weekend and going forward the women’s (Port Moresby Women’s Softball Association) will be running a corporate slow pitch tournament.
“Men’s will also have friendly games just to showcase softball to corporates to start the competition.”
Meanwhile, the competitions around the country are still in recess.
Bais said as soon as their season games began, outside centres would also resume their competitions.
“Moresby is the heartbeat of softball so if we start it here the rest of the centres will kick off as well.”
