CHURCHES are good partners in developing people’s capacities to go into business, Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) acting managing director Henry Marasembi says.

He said this on Wednesday after thanking the United Church of the East Central Papuan region for its training partnership with SBDC.

The church was involved in a business training seminar conducted by the SBDC for  260 people.

United Church-East Central region Bishop Rev Laka Renagi said there is plan to train more than 500 people every year to help church members become self-reliant.

“Such activities conducted in the community help alleviate poverty and encourage people to look after themselves,” Renagi said.

“I’m encouraging my people to get involved in such trainings so they could make money and learn how to manage it … this way, they could one-tenth of their earnings to God,” he added.

Areas within the region that took the “start and improve your business” (SIYB) trainings included Kwikila, Kupiano and Hula.

Marasembi said SBDC is working at empowering churches so that they could carry out their own training for members.

“I encourage other churches to work together with SBDC to train their people on the proper way to run a business,” he said.
