VADAVADA United edged L & A Bulldogs 19-18 in golden point extra time to win their maiden premiership in the Moresby South Rugby League grand final at the PNG Football Stadium in Waigani on Saturday.
Their efforts earned them the Justin Tkatchenko Cup and K10,000 to end the season on positive note.
United and Bulldogs were deadlocked 18-18 at fulltime in a tense final.
The game was then forced into two five-minute halves of golden point extra time with Vadavada’s Yunny Patrick kicking the match-winning field goal.
Patrick’s efforts got him the the man-of-the-match award and K200 from Port Moresby Rugby League chairman Dr James Naipao.
Halfback and captain Jason Wings was also outstanding for Vadavada.
Vadavada sponsored by MTSL & Islands Mobile Hire Cars Ltd led 18-16 with three minutes remaining but an infringement from 30 metres out and Bulldogs Obert Muri equalised.
The Bulldogs led 12-6 at halftime before United came back to get in front in the final quarter.
United were able to grab their first premiership after making the finals every year since 2013.
In the women’s final, Koni Sharks beat Warako Storm 12-10.
In the U20s final, Sub City Raiders beat Joyce Bay Roosters 10-6.
Moresby South MP and MSRL patron Justin Tkatchenko kicked off the grand final and thanked the fans for coming out to back their teams and encourgared them to be good supporters.
