AFTER four weeks of competition, it came down to final match that saw SNS United defeating Raukele in the Port Moresby Cricket Association’s Super 6s challenge.
In the playoff for third place, Kilakila fell victims to Poreporena, allowing Raukele to leapfrog Kilakila into first place.
Going into the final day, United needed to win both the remaining matches of the A grade and B grade divisions and have the other results fall their way to lift the trophy.
In the A grade, Raukele took on United in the grand final at the Colts Two ground after winning the toss.
Raukele did not hesitate in batting first with the likes of national players, Assad Vala, Tony Ura and Jason Kila, leading their batting attack.
After scoring 12 runs of the first over, Vala (7) fell to the bowling of national captain Rarua Dikana, when the score reached 18.
The United bowling attack controlled the Raukele innings, taking regular wickets at critical stages.
Raukele was bowled out for a modest score of 64 in the 7.4 overs with Tony Ura (21) and Arina Lahari (20) being the major contributors for Raukele.
Mauhuru Dai (1/16) and Sese Bau (1/2) had an impact with the ball, but the stand out performance again was the current PNG Barramundis captain, Dikana, who took 2/12 of 1.4 overs.
United had no problems chasing down the total, reaching the score in the sixth over and matched Raukele’s opening overtaking 12 runs of the bowling of Inoa Baeau.
The match turned on its head when Lega Siaka (28) and Mahuru Dai (12) not out, hit 24 of the next over.
Siaka was the main destroyer hitting three sixes in a row and a boundary in the carnage while Ura took some revenge on Siaka, dismissing him in the next over. But the game was virtually over by then with Sese Bau (25) not out, joining Dai to finish of the innings with three overs to spare.
The overall placings: SNS United in first place with 18.5 points and taking the K2,000 prize money and a kit of cricket equipment.
KCC finished second with 17.5 points, Raukele on 17 points followed by Poreporena on 14.5 points.
