THE United Nations Women will partner with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) market division to pilot a new computerised fee system for vendors.
UN Women programme specialist Christina Cheong said they had piloted a new computerised fee system with vendors at the Boroko food market.
Cheong said the system would probably be implemented next March.
“Vendors pay for market space and receive a receipt,” she said.
“The system informs city hall that money has been paid.
“This system is safer and efficient. It limits vendors being extorted to pay extra money”
Cheong said the fee system was to be implemented in all NCD markets from March 2018.
In addition, she said through the partnership with NCDC market division they sought to make markets safe for women and girls.
Cheong said they had been able to upgrade the capacity of security staff through various trainings.
They also aided vendors in creating vendor associations to ensure proper channelling of vendor issues to the NCDC.
Furthermore, the UN Women hold monthly community events in the markets.
They host public presentations on various topics such as crime, health and nutrition.
NCDC market division planning supervisor Rex Kuman said the major challenge to the implementation of the computerised fee system is the low level of literacy of vendors.
Kuman said it was something new and the market division would tailor it to suite vendors.
He said the UN Women had also funded the infrastructural developments at the Gerehu market.
“The Gerehu market development is one achievement we have been working in partnership with UN Women,” he said.
“Gerehu is the best market in the city right now.”
